Dr Anita Kaul and Dr Chinmayee Ratha were involved in organizing the Fetal Medicine and Genetic Workshop at the 55th All India Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology on the 26th January 2012 at Varanasi.
Prof Jan Deprest from the University of Leuven, Belgium was the invited guest.
Fetal Medicine and in particular surgical fetal therapy is an evolving field. The programme tried to cover aspects which is being practiced in India such as fetal blood transfusions to procedures which are available in Europe and USA but have not yet come to our country eg FETO for Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. Prof Deprest is a pioneer in developing the ballon which is used for tracheal occlusion, the basic principle behind this therapy.
The audience in the Hall was limited but consisted of doctors who are passionate about the field of fetal medicine so the discussions were very lively and informative.
We at Apollo Centre for Fetal Medicine are fortunate to have Prof Jan Deprest mentor us in a setting up our Fetoscopic Laser programme (for Twin to Twin Transfusion syndrome) and had our first successful case recently where both the twins are doing well
